Chapter Six

Sapphire wasn’t sure she’d ever be able to walk, much less take all of Joe again. Joe had to be exhausted, too. They had gotten to where they told each other everything, whispering words of love and commitment.

She decided to check some other parts of the grounds where she rarely ventured. She whistled and Tommy, her favorite of the guard dogs, sidled up and sat down next to her. He was supposed to be with her at all times, but she usually couldn’t find him. She suspected he was often in the woods chasing squirrels. Her father laughed that his constant companion spell hadn’t quite taken with the silly dog, but she was glad that he didn’t try to replace him.
